For drifting specifically, this is less balanced than the general gas-versus-electric argument, because drifting depends almost entirely on how quickly you can put torque to the rear wheels and take it away again.
The mechanical difference that matters
A drift is a controlled loss of rear traction that you sustain with throttle. To hold it you need to add and remove torque in fractions of a second, hundreds of times per session.
An electric motor makes maximum torque at zero rpm and responds to the pedal in milliseconds. There is no clutch, no power band, no lag. You think about it and the rear wheels answer.
A small gas engine makes usable torque in a narrow rpm band and reaches the wheels through a centrifugal clutch or a torque converter. Below the engagement speed there is nothing. Above it there is a surge. That surge is what makes gas karts snap into a slide rather than ease into one, and it is why gas drift karts have a steeper learning curve.
Neither is wrong. Electric is easier to learn on and easier to be precise with. Gas is more dramatic and rewards throttle discipline that electric does not demand.

The noise issue decides more purchases than anything else
This is the practical point that spec comparisons miss. A gas drift kart at 95 to 105 dB is audible across a neighbourhood. On a suburban cul-de-sac, in a light industrial park after hours, in a school lot on a Sunday, that noise is the thing that ends the session, not the fuel tank.
An electric kart at the same lot is a tire squeal and a whine. People walk past it. That difference is why plenty of riders who prefer how a gas kart drives still own an electric one: the electric kart is the one they are allowed to ride.
Where gas is genuinely the better choice
All-day sessions. If you ride four hours at a stretch, batteries lose. Two packs get you to two hours and then you are waiting.
Cold climates and unheated storage. A lithium pack in an unheated garage at 20°F will not deliver rated capacity and repeated cold cycling shortens its life. A gas engine starts.
You like engines. If tuning a carburettor is part of the appeal, electric removes the hobby along with the maintenance.
Very heavy riders on a budget. A cheap gas engine makes a lot of torque per dollar. Getting equivalent torque electrically means more voltage and more money.
Where electric wins outright
Learning to drift, riding anywhere near neighbours, riding indoors, riding in short frequent sessions, and not wanting to spend an April afternoon cleaning a carburettor that sat all winter. That is the majority of riders.
Converting rather than choosing
If you already own a gas kart with a decent frame, converting it is a real option rather than a compromise. The frame, steering, brakes and seat carry over. You are replacing the engine, clutch and fuel system with a motor, controller and pack.

The verdict for drifting
