Are electric go-karts worth it for adults?

For most adults riding on private property, electric is now the better choice. That was not true five years ago and the reason it changed is torque delivery and maintenance, not top speed.
Here is the honest ledger.
Where electric wins
Torque from zero. An electric motor makes peak torque the instant it turns. On a drift kart this is the whole point, because breaking traction is a torque event, not a speed event. A gas kart has to be in the power band, which on a small engine means slipping a clutch and waiting.
Nobody calls the police. A gas kart at 100 decibels ends your riding at a suburban lot in about twenty minutes. An electric kart is quiet enough that the limiting factor becomes tire noise. This single fact decides where you can ride, which decides how often you ride.
Almost no maintenance. No oil changes, no air filter, no spark plug, no carburettor that gums up over a winter of sitting. On a gas kart the carburettor is the number one reason a machine that ran fine in October will not start in April.
It starts. Turn the key, press the pedal. No pull cord, no choke, no flooding.
Instant reverse. Useful more often than it sounds, particularly in a tight lot.
Where gas still wins
Refuel time. Thirty seconds with a jerry can against 4 to 6 hours on a charger. If you run organised sessions or ride all day, this is decisive and no battery chemistry currently on the market changes it.
Total runtime per session. 45 to 75 minutes for an electric adult kart. A gas kart runs as long as you keep pouring.
Cold weather. Lithium packs lose noticeable capacity below about 40°F. A gas engine does not care.
Repairability with generic parts. A small gas engine can be fixed with parts from any hardware store. An electric kart needs the right controller for the right motor, which usually means the manufacturer.
The runtime problem, and how people actually solve it
A second battery pack. It is the boring answer and it is correct. Two packs turns a 60 minute session into a 120 minute session with a two minute swap, and it costs less than the difference between a decent electric kart and a decent gas kart.
Check that the pack is a serviceable module with a standard connector before you count on this, because a sealed proprietary pack often cannot be swapped at all. The detail is in how long the battery lasts.
What about cost
Purchase price is roughly comparable at equivalent build quality. Running cost is not close.

Over five years electric is cheaper to run and more expensive in one lump when the pack goes. Most people prefer the lump they can predict.
Who should still buy gas
Two groups. People running long sessions with no charging downtime, such as a rental operation or a group that rides all Saturday. And people who genuinely enjoy engine work, for whom the maintenance is a feature rather than a cost.

The short answer
