Brushless vs brushed go-kart motors

The short version: brushed motors are cheaper up front and simpler to repair, brushless motors are more efficient and last far longer, and drift karts are unusually hard on brushes. That last point is the one that decides it.
How they differ
A brushed motor uses physical carbon brushes pressed against a spinning commutator to switch current through the windings. It is mechanically simple, works from a basic two-wire controller, and the brushes are a wearing part you can replace.
A brushless motor moves the switching into an electronic controller and the magnets onto the rotor. Nothing rubs. There is no commutator to arc and no brush dust. In exchange it needs a three-phase controller, usually with hall sensors, and both cost more.
Why drifting is hard on brushes
Brush wear is driven by current and heat, not by distance travelled. Drifting is close to the worst case for both.
Holding a slide means the motor spins slowly while producing high torque, which means high current at low rpm and poor airflow through the motor. A brushed motor in that condition runs hot, arcs more at the commutator, and wears brushes quickly. Riders report replacing brushes in a season of regular drifting where the same motor in a straight-line application would run for years.
That is why brushless dominates on anything sold as an adult drift kart.

When brushed still makes sense
Kids karts. Low current, light rider, short sessions. Brush wear is a non-issue and the cost saving is real.
Budget first builds. If the goal is to get a kart moving for the least money and learn the electrical side, a brushed motor and a simple controller is a legitimate starting point. You will replace it if the hobby sticks, and that is fine.
You want to be able to fix it in the garage. Brushes are a $15 part and a twenty minute job. A dead brushless controller is a replacement.
What to check when buying either
Continuous rating, not peak. Listings quote peak wattage because it is a bigger number, often double the continuous figure. Size on continuous.
Voltage rating matching your pack. A motor rated to 48V on a 72V system is a short-lived motor.
Shaft diameter and keyway. This is the boring detail that stops a build for a week. Confirm shaft size, keyway width and mounting bolt pattern against your chassis before ordering.
Hall sensors, on brushless. Sensored motors start smoothly under load, which matters enormously on a drift kart pulling out of a slide. Sensorless motors can cog or stutter at very low rpm. For drifting, buy sensored.
Cooling. Fan-cooled or finned housings hold up better in the low-rpm high-torque condition drifting creates.
Matching the controller
The controller has to match motor type, system voltage and continuous current, with headroom above the motor’s continuous draw rather than at it. A controller sized exactly at the motor’s rating is the one that cuts out eleven minutes into a session when heat soak sets in.

The recommendation
Adult drift kart: brushless, sensored, fan-cooled, rated continuous at or above your target power, with a controller sized 20 to 30% above the motor’s continuous draw.
Kids kart or a first learning build: brushed is fine and cheaper, and you will know within a season whether you want more.
