Overview

This is the component that turns a go-kart into a drift kart. The frame, the motor and the geometry all exist to make the sleeve’s behaviour usable.

A sleeve is a hardened polymer cylinder over the rear wheel, presenting a hard, smooth, low-friction surface to the ground instead of rubber. The important property is not just low friction, it is consistent low friction. A worn rubber tire also has less grip, but that grip varies with temperature, surface texture and how much rubber is left. A sleeve gives the same breakaway point on lap one and lap fifty, and that consistency is what makes drifting learnable, because you are calibrating your inputs against a known response.

Two compounds

Standard. More grip, requires more throttle to break traction, communicates the limit clearly through the seat, wears faster. The better choice on polished concrete and the better choice for learning.

Hard. Less grip, slides more easily, lasts longer, gives less feedback about where the limit is. The single most useful change available if you are stuck riding on rough chipseal asphalt.

Neither is better in the abstract. Together with front tire pressure, compound choice is most of the tuning available on a drift kart, and it is worth experimenting with once you are comfortable. Detail in how sleeve compound changes the slide.

Surface dominates everything else. Riding on rough chipseal is effectively running polymer against a file, and it is the strongest practical argument for finding better ground. Why surface matters this much is covered in why surface decides sleeve life.

Kids wear sleeves faster in hours, because they spend the whole session sliding, which is the point. They ride fewer hours, so a season is a reasonable expectation.

Getting even wear

Most riders have a strong direction and drift it more, which wears one side faster and produces a kart that slides well one way and badly the other. Riders usually blame the frame.

Two fixes, and you should do both. Rotate the sleeves left to right monthly, which takes five minutes. And practise your weak direction deliberately, which figure-eights force. The second is better for your riding as well as your sleeve budget.

Fitting

Five minutes per set with basic tools. The fit needs to be tight enough that the sleeve cannot rotate on the wheel under torque.

A sleeve spinning on the wheel is a common and confusing fault: acceleration goes soft, one spot on the sleeve wears flat, and the rider assumes a motor problem. If acceleration deteriorates, check for rotation marks between sleeve and wheel before suspecting anything electrical.

Fitment

Available in 5 inch and 6 inch wheel fitments. Fits every kart we build, and most karts we do not, provided the rear wheel matches one of those sizes.

Note that overall rear diameter affects your effective gearing. A significantly larger sleeve raises the gearing and reduces low-end pull, which is worth knowing if you change sleeve type and the kart suddenly feels lazy.

Keep a spare set

A worn set does not fail politely at the end of a session. Keeping a spare set on the shelf is $59 against losing a riding day, and it is the most common repeat purchase in this hobby for good reason.

Common questions

How long do slide sleeves last?

20 to 30 hours of adult riding on smooth sealed concrete. As little as 6 to 8 hours on rough chipseal asphalt. Surface is the dominant variable by a factor of three or four.

When should I replace them?

When wall thickness is down to roughly a third of new, when wear is deeply uneven and rotating no longer helps, when the slide has gone vague rather than just easier, or at any visible crack.

What is the difference between the compounds?

Harder slides more easily, lasts longer and gives less feedback. Standard gives more feel and wears faster. Hard is the better choice on rough asphalt, standard on polished concrete.

Can I use PVC pipe instead?

It works and it is how many people start. PVC goes out of round, wears unevenly, and can crack rather than wear, which is an unplanned grip event at speed.

Will these fit a kart you did not make?

If the rear wheel is a 5 or 6 inch fitment, usually yes. Measure the wheel diameter and check the sleeve sits tight enough not to rotate on the wheel under torque.
