Go-kart frames and build kits

The chassis is the part that must not fail, and the drivetrain is the part that must be sized correctly. We sell both separately: the same frames our complete karts use, and drive kits with the motor, controller, throttle, charger and pack already matched to each other.

Two ways in

Buy the chassis, add the drivetrain. A bare rolling frame with steering, wheels, brake and seat, pre-drilled for our drive kits. $449. See drift kart frames.

Buy the drivetrain, use your own frame. Motor, controller, throttle, charger and battery pack, sized to work together. $895 for the 48V set. See electric drive kits.

Both together is roughly $1,400, against $1,295 to $2,795 for a complete kart. You come out ahead at the top of the range and about level at the bottom, and you get a machine you can repair yourself either way.

Decide two things before you buy anything

System voltage. 48V for general adult use, 72V for a large lot and an experienced rider. This decides your motor, controller, pack, wiring gauge and connectors. Changing your mind later means replacing all of it.

Rated capacity. Your weight plus gear plus 10% headroom. This decides the chassis.

Everything else follows from those two. Builders who buy a motor because it was on offer and then work backwards end up with a mismatched system and a controller that cuts out ten minutes into every session.

Why we sell matched drive kits

Because the four most expensive mistakes in DIY electric karting are all sizing errors made before anything is bolted on:

  1. Controller sized at the motor’s continuous draw rather than 20 to 30% above it. Result: thermal cutout ten minutes into every session.
  2. Battery continuous discharge below the controller’s draw. Result: voltage sag, heat and protection tripping mid-corner.
  3. Geared for top speed. Result: a kart that bogs down at the 10 to 20 mph where drifting actually happens.
  4. Voltage mismatch anywhere in the chain. Result: usually a destroyed controller on the first full-throttle pull.

Add tools if you are starting from nothing, roughly $80 to $200 for a torque wrench, sockets, a multimeter and a crimper. Add freight and battery surcharges for anything sourced elsewhere, since most suppliers charge both. Ours ship free. And add a mistake tax on a first build, because most include one wrong part.

Converting a gas kart

If you already own a gas kart with a sound frame, converting it is the best value route in this whole category. You keep the frame, steering, brake, seat and axle, and replace the engine, clutch and fuel system with a motor, controller and pack.

Check the rear axle mount for cracks or a previous repair first. Converting a tired frame is putting a new drivetrain onto the part that will fail next.

Kids builds

Worth saying plainly: building a 24V kids kart usually costs more in parts than a complete one at $349. Manufacturing at volume beats buying at retail in that category. Build a kids kart because you want to build one, not to save money.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to build a go-kart than buy one?

Marginally on a first build, meaningfully if you already have tools. The bigger return is a kart you can repair and upgrade, rather than the initial saving.

Do I need to weld to build a kart?

Not if you start from a chassis pre-drilled for a drive kit. Fabricating your own motor mount usually means welding or making a bolt-on plate.

How long does a build take?

A weekend from a rolling chassis and a matched drive kit. Considerably longer sourcing components individually.

Can I put your drive kit on someone else's frame?

Usually yes. You will likely need to make a motor mount plate, since bolt patterns are not standard across manufacturers. Check shaft diameter, keyway and sprocket pitch first.
